Natural Landscape

Located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands, Kitchener has wet-climate soils and deciduous forests. The Grand River crosses through the city and curves out midway to create Kitchener's border. To the west of the city is a glacial kame called Baden Hill, the highest elevation for many miles. Another glacial feature is the Waterloo Moraine. Not only that, Kitchener is home to many artesian wells.
Th land is relatively flat with only some glacial remnants and its proximity to other large municipals makes it a great place to settle down. One problem that the city faced was its dependence on the Waterloo Moraine for water. 90% of the water supply in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo is the groundwater from the Waterloo Moraine aquifer system. When the groundwater is contaminated, many of the well fields in the region are shut down.

Kitchener is set in a rather convenient transportation route. Its center is located just kilometers of the Conestoga Parkway-Highway 8-King Street East intersection. Highway 8 connects the city to the MacDonald-Cartier Freeway. The Conestoga Parkway branches out into roads, which connects Kitchener to its surrounding cities.
